Opioid Dependence

Opioids are a type of medicine often used to help relieve pain. They work by lowering the number of pain signals your body sends to your brain. They also change how your brain responds to pain.   Opioids are legitimately used for treating pain, but when a patient builds up tolerence to the drug and requires more and more to get the same effect, this may be a first sign of addiction.   A patient with addiction to Opioids may experience withdrawal symptoms when they stop using the drug.  They may find themselves taking more than the prescribed dose or obsessively thinking about getting more medication or may be unsuccessful when trying to stop.
