​Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a virus that attacks the immune system, specifically targeting a T-cells, a type of white blood cell. If left untreated, T-cells will continue to be depleted and the disease will progress into AIDS. Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) refers to a condition in which a person’s immune system is weakened and extremely susceptible to life-threatening illnesses and diseases. When a person is first infected with HIV, they may experience flu-like symptoms, sore throat, swelling in lymph nodes, fatigue, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and fever. However, it’s also possible for people with HIV to display no symptoms at all until they progress to having AIDS. For this reason, it is important to get tested as soon as possible if you suspect that you have contracted HIV so that you can start treatment. If HIV is left untreated, it can lead to the development of AIDS, a severe illness, cancer, or death.
Patients with AIDS can experience similar symptoms to those with HIV, as well as severe weight loss, opportunistic infections, and pneumonia. If left untreated, AIDS leads to death, which is why it’s absolutely essential for patients to strongly adhere to their treatment.
